Child sex ring uncovered in Dbn

24/03/2009 09:48 - (SA)

Sharlene Packree

Durban - Top Durban businessmen have been linked to a child prostitution syndicate, after a newly formed provincial task team launched investigations into the city's child sex trade.

Month-long investigations by the task team, which is made up of organised crime unit members, National Prosecuting Authority officials and child prostitution experts, has revealed that some of the city's top businessmen have been involved in the syndicate, which prostitutes children, some as young as 10, to wealthy men.

The task team was launched after police noticed an increase in crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children.

The idea for the task team stemmed from an incident in which a Sierra Leone man lured under-age girls into a sex syndicate. The man promised the girls work, but instead sold them to rich businessmen.

He charged his clients R1 000 for a night with a young girl. The foreign national was arrested and charged under the Sexual Offences Act, Child Protection Act and Human Trafficking Act.

Asked for young girls

The businessmen are believed to have asked specifically for young girls to engage in sexual intercourse and other lewd acts.

While the names of the businessman could not be revealed, police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said that several had already been charged under the Human Trafficking and Child Pornography acts.

He said the task team is still investigating the syndicate and that revealing the men's names at this stage will jeopardise the investigation.

The syndicate and an incident involving a 16-year-old Phoenix girl who was allegedly drugged and raped by four boys at house party, have prompted authorities to act fast to prevent the further exploitation of children. The boys allegedly captured the rape on a cellphone. The video is also being circulated on the internet.

"This is a major problem for us. Matters that relate to children and women are a priority and we can't gamble with that. Those who exploit and abuse them will face the law," Mdunge said.

Joost gives up sex tape saga

Joost drops sex tape case
Article By: Nadia Neophytou Tue, 24 Mar 2009 10:04

The Joost van der Westhuizen sex tape saga appears to be at an end — but several questions remain about the infamous video.

Van der Westhuizen and private investigator Mike Bolhuis say they are now moving on.

Several weeks ago the pair was adamant the former rugby star would lay charges.

They say it is not an admission of defeat but that they do not want to spend time or money fighting the issue.

They say the do not want to expose van der Westhuizen's children to further media reports.

It is still not clear who was behind the making of the video or what their intentions were.

It is also unclear whether the former Bok captain is the man in the video.

Van der Westhuizen has maintained his innocence throughout but Heat magazine, which published the footage, says it is clear that it is him.

Mike Bolhuis has made such a "BOLLIE" of himself, we wonder if he will ever call

himself a "BAAS-PI" in his dismal life again.

It will take more than a "Bolliewood Bouncer" to become a true detective!

Rapport had a good lead on the whole saga!

Officers stand to lose assets such as houses if found guilty
Gauteng police have warned their members that a hunt for corrupt officials is on. This follows the arrest of four high-profile officers attached to the Krugersdorp crime intelligence unit, including the head of the unit, Senior Superintendent Dumisani Jwara.

Jwara was apprehended at the police provincial headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg, where he was attending a meeting.

Captain Caiphus Shange, was arrested in his colleague’s office at the Krugersdorp police station.

Heavily armed officers also headed to Captain Victor Julie’s house in Westonaria and arrested him.

The fourth man Captain Makgosani Landro, who was accompanied by his lawyer, handed himself over to the police.

National police spokesperson Tummi Golding said the officers’ houses and offices were searched. DVD players, CDs, more than 10 cellphones, bank statements and other documents were confiscated during the arrests.

The officers could also have their houses and other assets attached as investigations continue.

“If it is found that their houses or cars and other things were bought with the money they made from selling drugs to kingpins, those things will be seized,” Golding said.

She said Jwara had been in the police force for more than 10 years.

Golding was, however, not sure how long the captains had served in the police.

“One of the senior cops is a taxi owner. He claims that the taxis belong to his wife. We will investigate that. If it is found that they are in his name they will be confiscated,” Golding said.

“The officers took some of the consignments of drugs from crime scenes and sold them to drug lords around the country.

“Most of it was allegedly stolen from drugs which were seized at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.”

It is unclear how much the missing drugs are worth.

The Crime Intelligence Covert Collection Directorate in Pretoria has been investigating the case since 2006.

Last week, police confiscated drugs worth more than R185million at OR Tambo, in two separate operations.

Golding said when one of the captains was arrested he asked the police: “Why are you arresting me? What for?”

Golding said: “He was shocked when the police gave him the reasons. He then cooperated. The head of the unit tried to hide himself under a jacket as police led him to an unmarked police vehicle.”

The officers are expected to appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court today on charges of racketeering and fraud.

“Corrupt officials will be rooted out. We are definitely anticipating more arrests. We are proud to say that we are not ashamed to name one of our own,” Golding said.

This is just the tip of the "corruption Iceberg" in the SAPS!

The moles in "crime intelligence" should all be investigated.

We need a new ICD Unit to investigate corrupt cops!

Corruption is a more serious disease than AIDS in SA.

SAPS top management is responsible for the pandemic.

Taliban fighters ambush cops

Optimism over Taliban talks

Troop surge will buy time

Iran: US failing in Afghanistan

Kabul - Taliban fighters ambushed a police vehicle in southern Afghanistan on Monday, killing eight policemen, a senior official said, in the latest in a surge of attacks after the end of winter.

The ambush took place in the village of Rabat in Kandahar province on the border with Pakistan, where many militants fled after the US-led invasion in late 2001 that ousted the extremist Taliban regime.

"A police vehicle was attacked in an ambush in the Rabat area of Spin Boldak district in which eight police were killed and one wounded," said local highway police commander Sahib Jan.

Kandahar is the birthplace of the Taliban militia, who swept into power in 1996 amid the chaos of civil war and are now trying to stage a comeback, already controlling several districts in the south.

Insurgent attacks generally pick up as spring arrives in Afghanistan and dozens of people have been killed in a series of deadly incidents over the past week.

The Nato-led force said on Monday its troops had killed a senior insurgent and nine others in an operation in the southern province of Helmand.

The men were killed in the Kajaki area on Saturday, the International Security Assistance Force said. Most ISAF troops in the region are British.

"Maulawi Hassan was killed, along with nine of his associates, during an operation that targeted his compound," ISAF said in a statement.

It said Hassan was heavily involved in illegal activities such as suicide attacks and bombings.

He reported to a senior Taliban commander, Mullah Rahmatullah, who directed insurgent activity from outside Afghanistan, ISAF said, in a likely reference to Pakistan, where Taliban and other Islamic extremists have bases.

The details could not be verified immediately with Afghan authorities.

Helmand is also a flashpoint in the brutal insurgency that last year notched up a record number of attacks with nearly 2 200 civilians killed by both sides.

US President Barack Obama, who has switched the focus of the "war on terror" from Iraq to Afghanistan, has ordered 17 000 more US troops for Afghanistan, where there are already about 75 000 soldiers under US and Nato command.

He is also preparing to roll out a major new strategy for the embattled nation in a bid to turn around a stagnant war seven years after the invasion.

Military slams violent t-shirts

23/03/2009 20:22 - (SA)

Israeli soldiers break ranks

Jerusalem - Israel's military condemned on Monday T-shirts, worn by soldiers, that depict scenes of violence against Palestinians as the army faces increasing domestic criticism over its conduct during the recent Gaza war.

The T-shirts, ordered by troops to mark the end of basic training and other military courses, were worn by a number of enlisted men in different units, the daily Haaretz newspaper reported. They were not made or sanctioned by the military.

One depicts a child in the cross-hairs of a rifle with the slogan, "The smaller they are, the harder it is," said one of T-shirts shown in Haaretz. Another shows a pregnant woman in the cross-hairs and the words "1 Shot 2 Kills." Others depict a soldier blowing up a mosque and Palestinian women weeping over a gravestone.

The Tel Aviv factory that made many of the shirts, Adiv, refused to comment.

Disciplinary action

The shirts "are not in accordance with IDF values and are simply tasteless," the army said in a statement. "This type of humour is unbecoming and should be condemned."

The statement said disciplinary action would be taken against troops wearing the T-shirts.

The Israeli military has been facing increased criticism at home for its conduct in Gaza in the aftermath of published testimony from several unidentified soldiers released last week.

The soldiers' testimony described troops killing Palestinian civilians, including children, by hastily opening fire under relaxed rules of engagement. The soldiers also reported the wanton destruction of civilian property.

The three-week Gaza offensive, launched to end years of rocket fire at Israeli towns, ended on January 18. According to Palestinian officials, around 1 400 Palestinians were killed, most of them civilians. Thirteen Israelis died, three of them civilians.

Crime stats blackout won't help - DA

Dianne Kohler Barnard MP says minister's proposal for further delay is irresponsible

Crime statistics: Covering up crime won't make it go away

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is disappointed by Minister of Safety and Security, Nathi Mthethwa's statement on an SABC 3 Interface debate that crime statistics should only be released every two years. This Minister has already gone back on his predecessor's commitment to release crime statistics twice annually, and it would be deeply irresponsible for the publishing of statistics to be delayed any further.

Covering up crime won't make crime go away, and the DA will write to the Minister, urging him to reconsider his position in light of the damage it will do to crime fighting institutions in this country.

Facing one of the highest crime rates in the world, South Africans deserve a government that is open, accountable and transparent. Regularly-released crime statistics play an essential role in the fight against crime, and are particularly helpful to law enforcement officers, who need updated crime statistics in order to respond to the specific localised crime situation in their communities.

The Minister's refusal to adhere to one of the few positive developments under his predecessor's reign indicates that the government is backtracking on its commitment to be tough on crime. What's more, if statistics showed that the outlook was improving, it goes without saying that the Minister would be shouting about it from the rooftops. It is difficult to believe that the Minister's decision not to release crime statistics before the election is anything other than a political ploy.

Once again, the ANC shows it is more concerned about playing politics than working for communities.

Under a DA government, crime statistics will be updated continuously, using a real-time crime information system. Information would be available to any member of the public via a real-time internet crime database, which would allow for detailed data analysis.

Weekly reports generated by the system would be used by the SAPS to develop specific responses to localised problems, and the database would be integrated with statistics generated by the Departments of Justice and Correctional Services. This is one of the central pillars in our criminal justice policy, and could not stand in sharper contrast to the backward stance adopted by the Minister.
